As Secretary of the City of Milwaukee Community Service & Volunteer ERG, Likisha has turned her enthusiasm into action, rallying City employees around the Girls on the Run mission. After first joining the 5K at the invitation of former event lead Joe, she stepped into the role of Cheer Station Captain in fall 2024.
Since then, she has recruited City employees to bring their energy and encouragement to six Girls on the Run 5Ks and helped organize a spring 2026 Lunch & Learn to introduce even more colleagues to Girls on the Run.
Likisha continues to show up season after season because she believes every girl deserves someone cheering her on.
“My first Girls on the Run event left my jaw on the pavement. I couldn’t believe how many girls were there—or everything that was being done to support them. Seeing all those smiling faces gave me such a warm, happy feeling.”
What keeps you coming back each season?
“I love being involved with anything that empowers girls and young women—everything I wish I had growing up. Someone on the sidelines cheering, yelling and reminding me that I can achieve the goals I set for myself. Knowing someone who doesn’t even know me still cares enough to believe in me—that’s powerful. I want every girl to feel that.”
What impact have you seen Girls on the Run make?
“I think the girls gain a true sense of belonging. What we pour into them carries into their everyday lives. When they believe they can accomplish something great, they’ll continue reaching for greatness.”
What is one Girls on the Run 5K moment you’ll never forget?
“For me, it’s the same every year—the anticipation of seeing that very first participant. Knowing she deserves every ounce of energy I have to cheer her on. That feeling has always been, and always will be, my favorite part of volunteering.”
For Likisha, the impact of a Cheer Station goes far beyond the moments participants spend passing by. She hopes more organizations will experience the joy, connection and sense of community that comes with being part of a Girls on the Run 5K.
“There is no greater feeling than being part of this event. It’s so much more than cheering. Before you even reach your Cheer Station, you’ll see smiles, hear laughter and feel the excitement. Knowing you’re part of the happiness these girls will carry with them all day is incredibly rewarding.
“You also see the amazing support from sponsors and volunteers coming together to make each girl feel celebrated. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.”
Thank you, Likisha, and the City of Milwaukee for bringing your enthusiasm, leadership and heart to Girls on the Run. Together, we’re building healthier, more connected communities where every girl feels supported and celebrated.
