At Girls on the Run, the 5K is not about who is fastest. It is about who shows up with heart and determination.
Every girl on the course is doing something brave and building their confidence. For some, it is their first 5K. For others, it is a moment of proving to themselves that they can do hard things.
Your role at a Cheer Station is easy, yet impactful:
Make sure every participant feels seen, supported, and encouraged.
Whether someone is running, jogging, walking, skipping or rolling, your energy helps carry them forward.
On 5K Day, Cheer Station Captains will start the morning by checking in at the Volunteer Check-In Table to pick up their Cheer Bags—filled with clappers, chalk, and fun Girls on the Run signs to help bring the energy all day long.
All other volunteers can head directly to their assigned Cheer Stations, get set, and be ready to cheer on participants by 9 a.m. when the first wave begins.
Captains will help close down their stations once the final “Wonder Walkers" have passed through. All volunteers are invited to head to the Finish Line to keep celebrating and cheering every finisher across the line. For additional day-of details and helpful tips, be sure to review our Cheer Station FAQs.
Leading the Energy: The Cheer Station Captain
Being a Cheer Station Captain is about more than organizing a group. It is about setting the tone.
You are creating a space that feels:
- Welcoming
- High-energy
- Inclusive
You are guiding your volunteers to cheer with intention and encouragment. Creating energy and celebration for evey person who passes your station.
Because every step on that course matters.
