Cheer Station 101: Creating Joy & Confidence at the GOTR 5K

The Power of Showing Up Loud and Proud

At Girls on the Run, the 5K is not about who is fastest. It is about who shows up with heart and determination.

Every girl on the course is doing something brave and building their confidence. For some, it is their first 5K. For others, it is a moment of proving to themselves that they can do hard things.

Your role at a Cheer Station is easy, yet impactful:
Make sure every participant feels seen, supported, and encouraged.

Whether someone is running, jogging, walking, skipping or rolling, your energy helps carry them forward.

On 5K Day, Cheer Station Captains will start the morning by checking in at the Volunteer Check-In Table to pick up their Cheer Bags—filled with clappers, chalk, and fun Girls on the Run signs to help bring the energy all day long.

All other volunteers can head directly to their assigned Cheer Stations, get set, and be ready to cheer on participants by 9 a.m. when the first wave begins.

Captains will help close down their stations once the final “Wonder Walkers" have passed through. All volunteers are invited to head to the Finish Line to keep celebrating and cheering every finisher across the line. For additional day-of details and helpful tips, be sure to review our Cheer Station FAQs.

Leading the Energy: The Cheer Station Captain

Being a Cheer Station Captain is about more than organizing a group. It is about setting the tone.

You are creating a space that feels:

  • Welcoming
  • High-energy
  • Inclusive

You are guiding your volunteers to cheer with intention and encouragment. Creating energy and celebration for evey person who passes your station.

Because every step on that course matters.

Encouragement That Sticks

The words you use matter more than you think.

A simple “You’ve got this!” can shift someone’s entire mindset.
A “Look how far you’ve come!” can remind a participant why they started.
A “You belong here” can be the exact message someone needed to hear.

Some go-to cheers that always land:

  • You’ve got this!
  • Keep going strong!
  • We believe in you!
  • You are unstoppable!
  • So proud of you!

And when you want to build confidence:

  • Strong and steady!
  • You are amazing!
  • Keep shining!
  • You belong here. You are enough.

As participants get closer to the finish, your energy can rise with them:

  • Almost there!
  • Finish strong!
  • You did it!

There is no script you have to follow. The most powerful cheers are the ones that are real.

Creating the Experience: What Your Station Looks and Feels Like

A great Cheer Station is something participants can feel before they even reach it.

It looks like:

  • Bright, encouraging signs
  • Pom-poms, ribbons, and movement
  • Volunteers smiling, clapping, and engaging

It sounds like:

  • Upbeat, family-friendly music
  • Clapping rhythms and chants
  • Voices cheering with excitement

It feels like:

  • Joy
  • Support
  • Community

You do not need anything over the top. The magic is in the energy you bring.

Centering the Message: Bold Heart in Action

The Girls on the Run experience is rooted in confidence, connection, and courage. Your Cheer Station is an extension of that.

Incorporate messages that reflect the Bold Heart curriculum:

  • Big Heart. Brave Steps. Strong Finish.
  • Lead with Your Bold Heart
  • Every Bold Heart Belongs Here
  • Run With Heart. Shine With Confidence

You are not just cheering for a race. You are reinforcing everything participants have learned throughout the season.

More Than a Moment

For many participants, the 5K is a defining moment.

And what they remember most will be the moment someone cheered their name.
The sign that made them smile.
The group of people who believed in them when they needed it most.

That is the impact of a Cheer Station.

A smile.
A clap.
A voice calling out encouragement.

These small moments stay with people.

Final Thoughts

There is no such thing as a perfect Cheer Station.

There is only:

  • Showing up
  • Bringing energy
  • Encouraging with intention
  • Creating joy

When you do that, you help create an experience where every participant feels:
Capable. Supported. Celebrated.

And that is what Girls on the Run is all about.
